Stay Safe Around Open Water This Summer |
||
|
As temperatures rise, more people are visiting rivers, lakes, canals, reservoirs and other open-water locations to cool off. While open water can appear safe, it can contain hidden dangers including cold-water shock, strong currents, deep water, submerged objects and slippery banks. Key Safety Advice✅ Never enter water to cool down after becoming overheated – enter slowly if swimming is permitted. ✅ Avoid swimming in canals, rivers, quarries, reservoirs or other unsupervised locations. ✅ Do not jump, dive or tombstone into open water. Hidden hazards beneath the surface can cause serious injury. ✅ Children should always be supervised near water. ✅ Avoid alcohol or drugs when participating in water-based activities. ✅ If walking near water, keep dogs on a lead where appropriate and be aware of unstable banks. If Someone Gets Into DifficultyCall 999 immediately and ask for the Fire Service if inland water rescue is required. Remember the Water Safety Code: Please share this advice with family members, particularly children and young people, to help prevent avoidable incidents during the summer months. Stay safe and enjoy the warmer weather responsibly. | ||
